The Krewe of Mid-City reclaims its title as Best Day Parade!
The venerable Rex Duke (Gambit Weekly Magazine's esteemed parade reviewer) bestowed 4 1/2 crowns on the Krewe of Mid-City's 71st parade. "Once a venerable Mid-City tradition, this distinguished procession has kept all its glitter even through its relocation Uptown. Thanks to a sunny day, the foil floats sparkled, and the theme, 'The Things We Do For Love,' included one of the most impressive floats of the season, 'Showered With Gifts,' displaying shiny white packages with red bows. Once again, Mid-City's band competition brought out the best, especially Memphis' Northside High School."
For ten of the the prior eleven, Mid-City had been named 'Best Day Parade' by Gambit Weekly Magazine. In a review of the 2002 parade the Gambit Weekly awarded Mid City 4 out of 5 crowns, and went on to write, "This is easily one of my favorite day parades. The 'one way or another' theme was a perfect family-fun theme with it's use of palindromes (2002 - get it?). The brightly colored aluminum foil floats (unique to this krewe) were typically beautiful and gleamed on a warm, sunny day. The 'TNT' and 'Race Car' floats stood out in particular. Mid-City showed its 69 years well by its adherence to tradition, despite its move to uptown." Mid-City was also noted in the "Favorite Themes" section for its theme "One Way or the Other," a play on palindromes.
The February 1st 2001 edition of the New Orleans Magazine writes, "Mid-City has always been one of the best day parades, and now it may be getting even better. A float builder who grew up helping around the den has taken charge and is adding more intricate details. The Krewe's management has also gotten aggressive about strengthening the organization. Mid-City's bright, foil covered, floats are a one-of-a-kind. The good news is it seems like the Krewe's legacy will continue."
